Oxalic Acid

 Hello Friends :)
Something I have been wanting to talk you about is Oxalic Acid. Not to alarm or place fear on anyone but to share with you some of what I have read. Feels like a "tainted subject" with not being able to find everyone in agreement. I have waited to chat about this not wanting anyone to "give up" on juicing. I am praying if this is a something I or others should be aware of,  that God will give me revelation on this.

One morning a couple months ago I got up and made beet juice alone without a apple or adding anything to it. About a half hour later I drank my hulk drink. Before I started to juice my hulk drink I noticed my tummy felt sick and I just wanted to lay down. I fought through it telling myself nothing is wrong and drank my green hulk drink. Then my throat started to burn. I thought oh dear my thyroid is acting up again. But it was different. It was that way for a couple hours and eventually faded. I did not think much about it until I read something on line about Oxalic acid. Made me think I had a reaction when I juiced beets alone. Now I wonder what happened in my body during that time........

I pulled some information from other juicing sites for this. Even as I type this out I still wonder is this really a big deal? There is so many conflicting articles I have read. My friend Katie said she feels the same way. So holy spirit gets to be our guide :)  Will I stop juicing spinach that I so love? No way unless God shows me its not good for my body. What is good for some might not be ideal for another person. If I need to be more conscience about this then I feel God will reveal that to me. If NOT I am going to go on juicing the beautiful veggies he made for us! I feel the BEST when I juice greens! Juiced Alive and ready to go!

What is Oxalic Acid???????

Oxalic acid is found naturally in some foods. Oxalic acid does not combine well with metals like calcium and can form oxalate crystals that can irritate the gut and kidneys. Most kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate. MOST healthy people do not have any problems with oxalic acid but those with kidney disorders, gout and arthritis are advised not to have many  foods that contain it. With all that I have been reading warnings keep popping up with oxalic acid interfering with calcium. We need calcium so it would be a major bummer if all the spinach juicing I do is depleting my body of calcium. Hmmmmmmm......

I found this article on line and wow it made me think of how my throat felt when I drank beets alone. I found this on drinking beets alone.

Drinking the juice pure can cause constrictions in the throat and difficulty breathing. This is because the nitric acid produced from the beetroot juice causes the blood vessels to dilate. The widening of blood vessels increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure, but hypotension can cause dizziness and shortness of breath. Consuming large amounts of beetroot juice can cause temporary paralysis of the vocal chords. It is recommended that the juice be diluted at least four times with milder juices to prevent this.

From what I have been reading some say you must exercise for the oxalic acid to be metabolized. If you get to much oxalic acid body starts to loose nutrients. Not everyone agrees it can be harmful. Most agree that juicing any fruit or veggie does the body good. Some say don't juice spinach and broccoli together. Oxalic acid and calcium combined create a indigestible compound so research says not to juice oxalic rich foods and calcium rich foods together. If you stick with that rule you may want to avoid eating calcium rich foods immediately after juicing veggies in high oxalic acid.

I did read that if you are concerned about getting a reaction with juicing any of the listed below fruits and veggies that you should add a lemon or lime to the juice. Also read that you should never cook spinach because it causes the oxalic acid. I can't say I cook spinach often but it won't make me stop if I want cook up a omelet layered with spinach.

Foods that contain significant concentrations of oxalic acid include (in decreasing order):
  1. buckwheat
  2. star fruit (carambola)
  3. black pepper
  4. parsley
  5. poppy seed
  6. rhubarb
  7. spinach
  8. chard
  9. Beets and beet greens
  10. banana
  11. cocoa
  12. chocolate
  13. most nuts
  14. most berries
  15. and beans

Again let the holy spirit be your guide on what you  should juice. Don't want to make it a religious thing and be bound to certain foods unless need be for a medical reason.

None of this is to cause anyone to be fearful but to use "wisdom" and find out what works for your body.

Blessings loved ones! I hope to hear good feedback from this :)

BE JUICED ALIVE!

that is interesting. i have heard before that you should never juice more than 1/2 a beet in one drink... maybe that throat thing is why? i never knew why actually. i love spinach too. i actually already put a lemon in most drinks just because i love lemons, so i guess i should keep doing it, right?! thanks for the info.

It is interesting for sure......Wish I knew the key to it all....I do fine with 3 or more big beets but I always have a apple or other veggies in the mix of it. I ended up with the throat thing on pure beet juice. It was strange but something to just know I don't want to do again :)

I definitely get that temporary irritated throat when drinking pure beet juice, which is a shame because I could use the juice's blood pressure-lowering benefits. Have you found mixing in some lemon juice to be effective at preventing the throat burn?

I drank pure beetroot juice yesterday morning and immediately felt dreadful straight afterwards. I had a terrible sore throat and just needed to go back to bed. Actually, I felt bad for the best part of the day. I am now glad to know why.

Raw spinach has the oxalates. Cooking spinach lowers oxalate content:

I am really interested in whether there is a way to remove oxalates from beets without removing the nitrates at the same time.

I just googled sorethroat and beets & found your article. Insightful. was just preparing golden beets for dinner, and had one smooth beautiful looking beet and too lumpy bumpy beets I scrubbed them and cut them and as I was cutting the lumpy bumpy beat it looked white inside almost like horseradish and I was wondering if it was in a good or if it was horseradish there was a beat it looked like a lumpy bumpy golden beat as I took a bite my mouth started itching and kind of burning and it was very very bitter and sour further cut that particular beat I found the inside was black and eventually I got a really bad sore throat. The other lumpy bumpy beat had a black core as well and the regular beat was cooked in used for dinner but the bitter taste remained as did my sore throat. As I read your article I was wondering if at first you had a bad beet but apparently beets in general have a high bunch of that acid but if you get a rotten beet it's 20 times worse, as I just tasted it. Thank you for your article. God bless you

Same just happened to me. Juiced a golden beet, took a sip and didn't really like it. Added an apple, ginger, and sparkling water, but I'm not sure if I will finish it now due to sore throat.

🙉😂 funny! My finding is this: I've beet juiced for decades now. The pure beet 'burn' is not for me. It tells me at first sip how balanced my body's oh is at that time. For me I've found adding the Apple, spinach with celery and cucumber and bit of lemmon not only taste best, I can drink more of it (can't get enough actually) and never a burn! I think three idea is to feeeel well and eat eel so if something burns me, I'm not forcing it. Thanks for the research and sharing!

I just drank a mixture of 1 beet, celery, and 6-8 carrots and almost while I was drinking it I started to have a slight irritation in my throat. Didn't think anything of it until it continued after finishing the juice. I've had beets before and even had them in various juices when I was younger, but never experienced this before, I was almost panicking wondering i I was having an allergic reaction. I prayed and calmed down and then searched on line and found a few websites mention this can be an issue for some. I was really happy to come across this website. Thank you for sharing and posting about God.
